The SD was the intelligence agency of the SS (Schutzstaffel) and played a key role in gathering information, intelligence, and conducting security and counterintelligence operations. The SD was responsible for monitoring and suppressing opposition to the Nazi regime, as well as gathering information on political enemies, ideological dissenters, and foreign intelligence.
The SD had various responsibilities, including political surveillance, investigating conspiracies against the Nazi government, and dealing with perceived threats to the regime. It operated both within Germany and in occupied territories. The SD was also involved in intelligence gathering, propaganda, and maintaining control over concentration and extermination camps.
